Western Breezes Past Colby-Sawyer and Simmons To Wrap Up Colonial Invite

DANBURY, CT – The Western Connecticut women's volleyball team blanked visiting non-league nemesis Colby-Sawyer, 3-0, to open Day Two of the Colonial Invitational. The hosts then followed up the strong morning performance with a dominating 3-1 win over Simmons to wrap up the tournament. Western senior outside hitter Karissa Smith (Bristol, CT) was tabbed the Tournament MVP, while classmate setter Danielle Kaminsky (Southington, CT) also took home All-Tournament honors.


The Colonials blanked Colby-Sawyer, 3-0 (18-25, 18-25, 25-27) to begin the slate. Smith paced the hosts with a match-high 15 kills, while sophomore middle hitter Mikayla Aubry (Fresno, CA) and classmate Kamari King (East Hartford, CT) chipped in with eight and seven, respectively.

Kaminsky finished with 35 assists, while sophomore libero Jenna Pisano (Orange, CT) racked up 17 digs. Senior Gabrielle Rodriguez and rookie Rebecca Straubel led the Chargers with six kills apiece.


St. Joseph's College outlasted Simmons College, 3-2 (25-15, 22-25, 25-17, 23-25, 15-17) in a match shortly thereafter. Junior Morgan Tiska buried a team-high 11 kills to lead the Golden Eagles, while senior Courtney Bocchieri added 10. Rookie Morgan Weeg paced the Sharks with a match-high 17 kills, while senior Abby Hart chipped in with 15 kills and four blocks in the losing effort.


Colby-Sawyer notched its first win of the tournament against St. Joseph's, 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-20). Rookie Naarah Cox tallied a match-high nine kills, while Straubel added seven to lead the Chargers. Freshman Caroline McCoy also added a match-high 22 digs. Senior Kiersten Kissinger finished with eight kills to lead the Golden Eagles.


Western returned to action after a brief layoff to dominate Simmons in the finale, 3-1 (22-25, 23-25, 25-18,11-25). Smith pounded a match-high 25 kills, while King added nine. Kaminsky dished out 42 assists, while senior outside hitter Cady Cordes (Fallon, NV) notched seven kills and 25 digs. Senior Cailin Frederickson led the Sharks with 11 kills, while classmates Abby Hart tacked on 10 and Alex Itasaka earned a match-high 30 digs.

With the win, the Colonials finished the tournament undefeated and improved to 3-1 overall. Western returns to action against visiting non-conference opponent Emmanuel on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
