SPRINGFIELD, MA – Rookie forward Kaleigh Panek (Shelton, CT) tallied the lone goal of the game in the 7th minute of play to guide the Western Connecticut State University women's soccer team to a 1-0 shutout win at non-conference opponent Western New England on Monday night at Suprenant Field. In her first start, rookie goalkeeper Karly Martin (Bristol, CT) recorded seven saves en route to the shutout for the Colonials.
The Golden Bears held the advantage in shots, 18-11 and corner kicks, 4-2. But it was the Colonials who capitalized with the game-winner. With the victory, the visitors improved to 5-6 overall, while the hosts dropped to 4-6-1.
"After a hard fought win on Saturday, it was another strong effort by our team tonight," stated WestConn head coach Alex Harrison following his squad's third straight win. "We lost a few one-goal games earlier this season so its nice to see things move in the other direction," he added.
After a pair of Golden Bear shots to open the game, Panek netted the would-be game-winner just 6:58 into the match, good for her fifth goal of the season. The hosts had a chance to knot the count up with less than a minute remaining on a corner kick opportunity. However, Martin made the save on a shot from Kristin Decost.
WestConn looks to extend the winning streak at non-league foe Manhattanville College on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
