Autumn Sorice nets 50th career goal in 1-1 tie with Western New England

DANBURY, CT - Western Connecticut State University senior forward Autumn Sorice (Bethel, CT) scored her 50th career goal, but visiting Western New England University battled back and earned a 1-1 double-overtime tie at the Westside Athletic Complex on Tuesday afternoon.

Sorice gave the Colonials a 1-0 lead at the 7:36 mark with an unassisted goal.  It was her 10th goal of the season.

WestConn dominated on shot attempts the rest of the way, but could not get one by the Golden Bears' sophomore net minder Alex Lemekha (Stamford, CT).  The Colonials out shot the visitors, 22-9, but Lemenkha made 12 saves by the time the final horn sounded.

Western New England knotted the contest at 1-1 when Morgan Smith (Manchester, CT) was on the end of a 20-yard pass from senior co-captain Iman Shehemi (Feeding Hills, MA).  WestConn keeper Alexis Lainchbury (Hopewell Junction, NY) strayed too far out of position and left a wide-open goal for Smith to fill.

With 9:21 remaining in the second extra frame, the Colonials were awarded a penalty kick after a Golden Bears' defender was nabbed for a hand ball in the box.  Junior Lucy Daniels' (Bethel, CT) attempt on the 12-yard PK sailed high and wide of the goal.

Lainchbury finished with two saves for the Colonials and is now 2-0-1 on the season.

WestConn, now 11-0-1, is ranked fifth in the latest United Soccer Coaches Division III Poll, release earlier on Tuesday.

"We had plenty of chances today, but just couldn't put the ball away," stated WestConn head coach Alex Harrison.  "Everyone want a result against an undefeated team and Western New England was able to get one today."

The Colonials play host to intra-state rival Eastern Connecticut State University on Saturday, October 7.  The meeting, between the top two 3-0 teams in the Little East Conference, is set to begin at 2 pm.
