DANBURY, CT - Senior guard Gabrielle Hurlbert (Thomaston, CT) scored a team-high 15 points, but the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team dropped a 71-63 decision to visiting Albertus Magnus College on Tuesday night at Feldman Arena.
Joining Hurlbert in double figures for the Colonials was senior guard Genesis Torres (Stratford, CT) who contributed 13 points and pulled down five caroms.
The Falcons, which trailed 46-42 after three quarters, erupted for 29 points in the final quarter as senior guard Shyla Osmond (New Haven, CT) took control. She finished with a triple-double of 34 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists for the winners. The 5'5" speedster scored 18 points over the final 10 minutes of play and played the full 40 minutes.
Senior forward Rah Rah Thompson (Bridgeport, CT) added 17 points and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds for Albertus Magnus. Danbury High School graduate Andreah Orr (Danbury, CT) tossed in 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the floor.
AMC now 3-2, overcame four ties and 10 lead changes to finally pull away down the stretch. Its biggest lead of 10 points, 66-56, came with 1:23 remaining following a pair of free throws from Thompson.
The Colonials led by as many as eight points, 24-16 when Torres canned a long three-point bucket 1:32 into the second stanza. The hosts finished with a bench-scoring advantage of 21-2.
WestConn returns to action next Wednesday, December 4 when it opens Little East Conference play against intra-state rival Eastern Connecticut State University. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 pm at the O'Neill Center.
