NEW YORK, NY - Senior guard Gabrielle Hurlbert (Thomaston, CT) scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team to a 77-52 victory over Old Westbury in the consolation game of the Hunter Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
Hurlbert led a trio of double-digit scorers for the Colonials, which improve to 2-3 on the young season. Freshman Susan Almeida (Danbury, CT) added 13 points while senior Genisis Torres (Stratford, CT) chipped in 10 points for the winners.
Ashley Cattle led Old Westbury with 16 points while Phalan Smith added 10 points for the Panthers, which fall to 0-2 in the early going.
Hurlbert led the Colonials with six rebounds while freshman Jasmine Caldwell (Mount Vernon, NY) hauled in five caroms.
WestConn led from the start and held its largest lead, 27-points, 72-45, when senior Jessica Davis (Hamden, CT) connected inside the paint with 5:21 remaining in the game.
The Colonials outscored OW, 41-28 over the final 20 minutes.
Davida Warren collected a game-high 18 rebounds while Ja'nya Flash grabbed 11 boards in the loss.
WestConn will enjoy 10 days off before hosting Albertus Magnus College on Tuesday, November 26. The Colonials home opener against the Falcons, at Feldman Arena, is set for 6 pm.
