DANBURY, CT - Senior guard Jancy Sherwood (Poughquag, NY) led the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team in scoring, with 14 points, but the Colonials fell to visiting University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 110-83 at Feldman Arena on Monday night.
The Corsairs, atop the Little East Conference with a 10-1 record, improved to 17-3 overall.
They also placed four players in double figures in the scoring column. Nakira Examond (New Bedford, MA) led the way with 27 points on 11-of-14 shooting from the field. Jess Korzec (West Brookfield, MA) added 22 points while Shaelyn Carreiro (Fall River, MA) and Ashley Brown (New Bedford, MA) chipped in 14 and 13 points, respectively for the winners.
Knight and Tashai Price (Vernon, CT) led the Colonials with six rebounds.
Examond hauled down a game-high rebounds for the Corsairs.
Jordan Moretti (Johnston, RI) came off the bench for the visitors and handed out a game-high 10 assists.
The lead changed hand six time over the first 6:40 of the game. WestConn, now 10-11 overall and 4-8 in the league, last led, 11-10 six second earlier when Hurlbert converted a pair of free throws.
UMass Dartmouth led by 11 points, 28-17, by the time expired in the first quarter.
The Colonials drew within four points, 40-36, following a jumper in the lane by Knight with 2:50 left before intermission.
WestConn hits the road for the next two games beginning on Wednesday when it travels to Keene State College for a meeting with the Owls. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 pm.
