Western men's tennis defeats Rutgers-Newark, 7-2

DANBURY, CT - The Western Connecticut State University men's tennis team improved to 2-1 on the season with a 7-2 victory over non-league opponent Rutgers-Newark at Westside Courts on Thursday night.

After sweeping all three doubles matches, the Colonials took four of six singles matches on their way to victory.

Winners of both singles and doubles matches on the night include Western Chris Turner (Brookfield, CT) who defeated Eligjah Kim, 6-2, 6-0 at second flight singles and teamed with Brian Bucknam (Woodbury, CT) at top flight doubles over Ray Postadan and Kim, 8-5.

Second flight doubles teammates William Donahue (Weatogue, CT) and Ricardo Fuentes (Newtown, CT) defeated Derrence Tejero and Youssef Risk, 8-1 then went on to victories in singles action.

Freshman Jason Hipona ( and Daniel Winter (New Milford, CT) defeated Matt Palka and Stan Wu in third doubles, 8-4.  Hipona cruised over Ronald Luyo, 6-1, 6-2 at sixth singles.

The Colonials play host to John Jay College on Friday, April 11 at 3:30 pm before taking on UMass Dartmouth a day later at noon.
