Four Different Goal Scorers Lead WestConn At Castleton

CASTLETON, VT -  Senior forward Morgan Matthews (Bethel, CT) scored a goal and an assist as the Western Connecticut State University field hockey team defeated Castleton University, 4-1 Saturday afternoon at Dave Wolk Stadium.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Colonials opened up the scoring at the 19:16 mark of the second quarter. Matthews scored her seventh goal of the season to give the Colonials a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

The Spartans would not be down for long as the Spartans tied the game four minutes into the third quarter. Gabriella Hunt sent a ball into the striking circle and Kaitlin Bardellini found the back of the net after a scrum in front of the Colonials' goal. Bardellini tallied her 12th goal of the season as she continues to lead the team in goals and points.

The Colonials would quickly answer as Carly Matasavage (Middlebury, CT) used a fast break to score her sixth goal of the season.

WestConn would add one more in the third quarter as Lili Dickey (Westbrook, CT) put the visitors up, 3-1 with her second goal of the season.

"We won the game in the third and fourth quarter with our gritty play," acknowledged WestConn head coach Dani McDonnell.  "The team was able to make the necessary changes after the half and executed well."

The Colonials would put the game away with a goal late from Nora Swift (Brookfield, CT) in the fourth quarter.  She was set up with a pass from Matthews.
