KEENE, NH - The Western Connecticut State University field hockey team ran into a buzz saw on Saturday, dropping an 8-1 decision at Keene State College in the Little East Conference battle.
Sophomore forward Nora Swift (Brookfield, CT) tallied the Colonials' only goal on the afternoon. Her unassisted goal came at the 3:33 mark of the first quarter and gave the visitors a 1-0 lead.
The Owls, 8-5 overall and 6-1 in the conference, scored eight unanswered goals the rest of the way.
Maggie Cahoon's goal with 2:13 remaining before half-time, proved to be the game-winners for the hosts.
"We could not stop Keene's offensive corners today," stated WestConn head coach Dani McDonnell. "They were on a roll and were able to respond quickly to our initial lead. We need to learn from this and prepare for a two-conference-game week ahead of us."
Neve Manion (Newington, CT) made seven saves over the first three quarters before handing over the goalie duties with WestConn trailing, 7-1.
Samantha Ripegno (Stamford, CT) made two saves during the fourth quarter.
Rachel Loseby made one save for Keene State in 45 minutes. Jordan LaRaus was not challenged in goal over the final 15 minutes.
WestConn, 9-2 overall and 5-1 in the LEC, plays host to University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on Wednesday, October 9. Game time is set for 6 pm at the Westside Athletic Complex.
