MAHWAH, NJ - Senior forward Morgan Matthews (Bethel, CT) scored in the seventh minute and the Western Connecticut State University field hockey team went on to shut out Ramapo College, 1-0 in the 2019 season opener on Friday afternoon at the Athletic Center.
Matthews, the team's all-time leading scorer since the program was resurrected in 2005, scored the unassisted goal 6:58 into the contest.
Junior goalie Neve Manion (Newington, CT) earned the shutout after making six saves on Friday.
Samantha Stolker suffered the loss for the Roadrunners. She made nine saves in the cage.
"It was a solid hard-fought win for us to begin the season," stated WestConn head coach Dani McDonnell. "It was truly a top effort from all of our players."
The Colonials, now 1-0, finished with a 17-11 advantage on offensive corners in the opener.
"We won a lot of offensive corners, which is fantastic, but we need to convert a higher percentage to be successful as we move forward," added McDonnell.
As expected the statistics were balanced as WestConn held a slim, 14-13 advantage on shots and both goalies were credited with nine saves on the afternoon.
The Colonials get right back at it on Saturday when they player host to William Paterson University at the Westside Athletic Complex. Game time is set for 1 pm against the Pioneers.
