Field Hockey Falls to Bridgewater State, 5-2, as McConnell and Redstone Honored on Senior Day

DANBURY, CT – The Western Connecticut State University field hockey team fell to visiting Little East Conference foe Bridgewater State University, 5-2, on Saturday afternoon at The Westside Athletic Complex on Senior Day. Greta McConnell (Norwalk, CT) and Hannah Redstone (Washington, CT) were honored by the Colonials before the contest.

Rookies Kimberly Brower (Mahopac, NY) and Amanda Spano (Mahopac, NY) each netted a goal to lead WestConn, while junior Samantha Hayes (Norwood, MA) tallied a hat trick to pace the Bears. With the loss, Colonial rookie goalkeeper Neve Manion (Newington, CT) dropped to 5-10 overall, while combining with sophomore Elizabeth Fagan (Port Jefferson Station, NY) to record 10 saves. Junior Allison Chappell (Raynham, MA) earned the win, moving to 4-5, while teaming up with sophomore Jillian Delaney (Foxboro, MA) to notch six stops for the visitors.

The Bears clawed their way to an early 3-0 lead. Matthews drew first blood when she smacked home a rebound before slicing into the heart of the Colonials' defense to rip a right-handed rocket into the twine, completing the hat trick midway through the opening half.

WestConn retaliated when Brower took a feed down low from sophomore forward Morgan Matthews (Bethel, CT) and buried her fifth goal of the season, cutting the deficit to 3-1. The Bears answered less than two minutes later before the hosts did the same, making the count 4-2 heading into the break.

Freshman forward Emma Daly (Foxborough, MA) would score off a rebound in the second half, extending the Bridgewater lead to 5-2. With the loss, the Colonials fell to 5-10 overall and 4-6 in league play, while the Bears improved to 5-8 and 4-6.

"We had a tough start to the game and were not prepared for Bridgewater's aggressiveness. We now face a must-win situation at Framingham to have a chance at heading to the postseason," said WestConn head coach Dani McDonnell following the loss.

The Colonials return to action against visiting non-conference foe Lasell on Tuesday at 7 p.m. before heading to league opponent Framingham on Saturday.
