Field Hockey Downed at Westfield State, 6-3
WESTFIELD, MA - Junior midfielder Carly Matasavage (Middlebury, CT) netted a goal and dished out a pair of assists as the Western Connecticut State University field hockey team fell at conference foe Westfield State, 6-3, on Tuesday night. With the loss, the Colonials dropped to 5-8 overall and 4-4 in LEC play, while the Owls improved to 5-6 and 4-3.
"We were never really able to get in a groove tonight," said WestConn head coach Dani McDonell. "We had some strong spurts in our goal scoring but then lapses. We are looking forward to getting back on track when we meet Bridgewater State at home for Senior Day on Saturday," she continued.
The two teams traded goals in the first half with Westfield's Bunce scoring a pair countered by goals from Morgan Matthews (Bethel, CT) and Kimberly Brower (Mahopac, NY) from WestConn to make it tied 2-2 at the half.
Owls' Carly Zona (Auburn, Mass.) went on to break the tie as she ripped a shot from the top of the circle to make it 3-2. Teammate Brianah Parker (Sutton, Mass. / Blackstone Valley Tech.) found the back of the net just minutes later as she scored an unassisted goal in the 54thminute of play to lift Westfield State 4-2 over the Colonials. The goal was the first of Parker's collegiate career, splitting two defenders and beating a sliding goalkeeper.
The Colonials answered just a minute later as Matasavage flipped a pass from Matthews past Westfield State goalkeeper Molly Duff-Still (Hatchville, Mass. / Falmouth) to make it 4-3.
Rogers answered with back to back unassisted goals in the 59th and 65th minute of play to clinch the 6-3 victory over the Colonials.
Duff-Still played the full game in net for the Owls and made two saves.
