PROVIDENCE, RI — Western Connecticut was led by sophomore center fielder Andrew Luis (Danbury, CT) who went 1-for-3 with one run scored, a two-run homer and three RBI in the setback, but the Western Connecticut State University baseball team fell at Rhode Island College, 16-10 on Tuesday afternoon.
Junior designated hitter/relief pitcher Ryan Rotondo (Warwick, RI) belted a three-run home run and also picked up the victory on the mound to lead the Anchormen.
WestConn drops to 5-17 overall and are now 2-7 in the Little East Conference. RIC improves to 21-8 on its full slate and 6-3 in league action.
RIC junior third baseman Ray Zincone (West Warwick, RI) went 4-for-5 with three doubles, one run scored and one RBI. Sophomore left fielder Joseph Coro (North Providence, RI) was 2-for-3 with four runs scored and three RBI.
All nine batters in the RIC lineup had at least one hit in the game.
Rotondo went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and four RBI at the plate and also earned the win (1-0) on the mound, allowing one run on two hits to go along with three strikeouts in 1.2 innings of relief.
Freshman Tyler Schilb (Pawling, NY) took the loss (0-2) in the relief for Western Connecticut.
WestConn took the early lead when a three-run double from sophomore third baseman Jake Babon (Southington, CT) gave the Colonials the 3-0 advantage in the first inning.
RIC responded with four in the first, including a two-run double from senior first baseman Tyler Walsh (Cumberland, RI), to take the 4-3 lead.
The Anchormen pushed across four more in the second, highlighted by an RBI double from Coro to extend it to a five-run, 8-3 advantage. A sacrifice fly from Coro in the bottom of the third made the score, 9-3.
The Colonials battled back with three runs in the top of the fourth, paced by a two-run home from Luis, and used a two-run single from junior left fielder Moe Ortiz-Echeverria (Norwalk, CT) as part of a three-run fifth to knot the game, 9-9.
RIC regained the advantage in the bottom of the fifth on a three-run blast to right field off the bat of Rotondo to make the score, 12-9. It was Rotondo's third round tripper of the season.
The Anchormen tacked on a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend the lead to five, 14-9.
WestConn chipped away in the top of the seventh when an RBI single from junior first baseman Matt Mancini (Waterbury, CT) brought the visitors within four, 14-10.
RIC added two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth en route to the victory.
Wednesday's non-league game against Lehman College has been cancelled. The Colonials are slated to take on John Jay College on Thursday, April 18.
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will travel to Springfield on Wednesday, April 17 at 3:30 pm.
