PURCHASE, NY – Junior Greg Campbell (Harwinton, CT) went 4-for-5 and drove in four runs to lead the Western Connecticut State University baseball squad to a 16-6 win at non-league foe Manhattanville College on Wednesday afternoon. With the victory, the Colonials snapped a five-game skid and improved to 2-12 overall while the Valiants dropped to 6-8.
Juniors Matt Mancini (Waterbury, CT) and Moe Ortiz-Echevarria (Norwalk, CT) each chipped in with strong performances for the Colonials at the plate. Mancini hit 3-for-5 with three RBI's, while Ortiz-Echevarria finished 3-for-4 while driving home two runs and scoring three.
Sophomore pitcher Andrew Lojko (Trumbull, CT) tossed four scoreless innings in relief while surrendering just three hits and striking out a pair of Valiant batters.
WestConn got on the board first when rookie Adam Muzsi (Vernon, CT) came across the plate on a wild pitch in the top of the opening frame. The Valiants responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning.
However, the Colonials struck right back with five runs to recapture a 6-3 lead in the second. Ortiz-Echevarria ignited the spurt with an RBI single before senior Kyle MacLean (Southington, CT) completed the outburst with an RBI ground out.
The hosts evened the count at 6-6 in the fifth when Matt Tulte roped a double to right-center that cleared the bases.
However, the visitors put the game out of reach for good with a seven-run sixth inning highlighted when Campbell and Mancini each knocked two-run singles into the outfield. The Colonials would tack on a pair of runs in the seventh en route to the win.
WestConn returns to action when they host a doubleheader against visiting Little East Conference opponent Castleton on Saturday beginning at Noon.
