FORT PIERCE, FL - The Western Connecticut State University baseball team split a doubleheader against Delaware Valley University on Wednesday afternoon. The Colonials, now 1-7, defeated the Aggies, 5-3 in the second game after dropping a 5-2 decision in the opener.
With DelVal leading 2-1 after the top half of the fifth inning, the Colonials put a three spot on the board. Logan Terry (Ellington, CT) drew a one-out walk and advanced to second base on a single by Kyle MacLean (Southington, CT). Junior transfer Erik Merrill (Poughkeepsie, NY) laced a two-run double to right field to plate both Terry and MacLean with what proved to be the tying and game-winning runs.
The Aggies drew within a run when Flogel and Ladato each had RBI singles in the top half of the sixth inning.
The Colonials added an insurance run in the bottom half of that inning when Max Gregory (Jewitt City, CT) scored on a wild pitch with two outs.
Merrill paced the WestConn offense in the nightcap by going 2-for-3 with a double and three runs batted in.
MacLean scored a pair of runs and went 1-for-3 for the winners.
Righty Michael Kolf (Brookfield, CT) earned the victory after going five strong innings and allowing three earned runs on seven hits while striking out two and walking one.
Matt Fasoli (Trumbull, CT) registered the save after shutting down DelVal in the seventh inning, striking out two and walking one in the final inning of work.
Eldridge took the loss after yielding four runs, three of them earned, on six hits. He struck out two and walked three for the Aggies.
In the opener, the Colonials out hit the Aggies, 10-8, but their comeback bid fell short.
DelVal led 5-0 following a three-run fifth inning. Cody Brown started the scoring in the fifth with an RBI single to score Joey Lodato, who led off the frame with a single to the right side. Zackary Zgura followed with a two-RBI single to plate Tom Crooks and Lallis.
WestConn got on the scoreboard in the top half of the sixth inning when Moe Ortiz-Echevarria (Norwalk, CT) doubled to left field to score Kevin Smith (Vernon, CT) and Jake Babon (Southington, CT). Babon reached on a one-out walk and Smith followed with his second hit of the game.
Smith and Dante Postorino (Huntington, NY) paced the Colonials' offense as each went 2-for-3 in the loss.
Zgura was the only Aggie with multiple hits, going 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI and one run scored.
Lachenmayer earned the complete-game victory for DelVal. He allowed five runs on 10 hits and struck out and walked five Colonials.
Sophomore right-hander Mike Hendler (Purchase, NY) suffered the complete-game loss after allowing the five runs on eight hits. He struck out three and walked four on Wednesday.
The Colonials get right back at it on Thursday when they play Kenyon College in a doubleheader beginning at 9:30 am.
