Jasmine Grey, Kaleigh Panek and Lucy Daniels Honored By Little East Conference

official release from Darryl Konicki - LEC Assistant Commissioner

PAWUCKET, R.I. – The 2018 Little East Conference (LEC) women's soccer major awards and all-conference selections were announced Tuesday following a vote of the league's nine head coaches. Rhode Island College senior forward Brittany DeGrooth (Westerly, R.I.) was named the LEC Offensive Player of the Year, while Western Connecticut junior back Jasmine Grey (Naugatuck, Conn.) and freshman forward Kaleigh Panek (Shelton, Conn.) were named LEC Defensive Player of the Year and LEC Rookie of the Year, respectively. Southern Maine's Seth Benjamin was named the LEC Coach of the Year.

DeGrooth led the LEC in scoring with 17 goals and eight assists for 42 total points; her 17 goals were the most in the league, while her eight assists were the second-highest total. She finished her collegiate career as the Anchorwomen's all-time leader in goals scored with 41, while her 98 career points are the second-highest total in program history. She is the first player in program history to be named the LEC Offensive Player of the Year.

Grey leads a defense that allowed just seven goals and 36 shots on goal during conference play in the regular season and recorded a pair of shutout victories as Western Connecticut claimed its 11th LEC tournament championship. She is the fifth player in program history to be named LEC Defensive Player of the Year.

Panek led the Colonials in scoring during the regular season with 11 goals for 22 points, totals that placed her in the top-five in the LEC in scoring, and was named the LEC Championship Tournament Most Outstanding Player after scoring three goals to help lead WestConn to its fourth consecutive conference championship. She is the seventh player in program history to be named the LEC Rookie of the Year, the last being Nicole Corbin in 2002.

Benjamin guided the Huskies to a 14-5-1 overall record in his first season on the bench, and a berth in the LEC semifinals after fourth-seeded Southern Maine posted a first round victory over fifth-seeded UMass Dartmouth, marking the program's first postseason win since 2005. The Huskies were just 5-12-0 a year ago, and had not qualified for the LEC tournament since 2013. This marks the second LEC Coach of the Year selection for Southern Maine, the first being Steve Quinones in 2004.
