DANBURY, CT – Senior forward Autumn Sorice (Bethel, CT) notched two goals and an assist to lead the 25th-ranked Western Connecticut State University women's soccer team to a 4-0 shutout victory over visiting non-conference opponent SUNY New Paltz on Wednesday night at The Westside Athletic Complex. With the victory, the Colonials improved to 12-0-2 overall, while the Hawks dropped to 4-10-1.
"It was yet another great effort from our team. We finished when we had the opportunity and moved the ball well," said WestConn head coach Alex Harrison following the win.
The Colonials struck quickly to open the scoring when senior Andrea DeVoe (Farmington, CT) took a pass from Sorice and fired home her sixth goal of the season just 4:03 into the contest. The hosts stretched the lead to 2-0 when Sorice weaved through a pair of defenders and blasted a low shot from the right wing just inside the left post shortly before the break.
The barrage continued to start the second half as the Colonials buried a pair of goals in the first three minutes. Sorice dribbled in from midfield, racing past a defender and ripped her team-leading 12th goal of the year into the right side of the twine. Moments later, junior Allison Oakley (Beekman, NY) threaded a pass across the box to classmate Aileen Maloney (Trumbull, CT) who then booted a ball into the open side of the net, rounding the count out at 4-0.
WestConn rookie goalkeeper Alexis Lainchbury (Hopewell Junction, NY) improved to 3-0-1 and recorded seven saves, while freshman netminder Megan Tornatore (Glen Head, NY) finished with four saves and fell to 1-7 for the Hawks.
The Colonials return to action at LEC foe Rhode Island College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
