DANBURY, CT - Lauren Bradshaw (Bethel, CT) and Brooke Baldelli (New Fairfield, CT) led the Western Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team to a thrilling 10-8 victory over Western New England University at the Westside Athletic Complex on Monday night.
Bradshaw scored four goals and Baldelli tacked on a hat-trick as the Colonials improve to 8-3 on the season.
Caroline Galligan (Marshfield, MA) added a pair of goals while freshman Mia Schumey (West Hartford, CT) her fourth goal of the season. It was Galligan's second goal of the night, and 31st of the season, that proved to be the game-winning goal. Her game-winner came with just under 14 minutes still remaining in regulation. Schumey's tally was an insurance goal with 1:24 remaining in the contest.
"Caused turnovers and draw controls were the key to success tonight," stated WestConn head coach Jenn Thomas. "Denying their transition was critical against a strong team like WNEU, and that is something we have been focusing on a lot this season."
The Golden Bears, now 6-6, were led by Eileen Ruby's (New Fairfield, CT) four goals and two assists. The former high school teammate of Baldelli now has 29 goals on the season.
Hannah Jarvis (Westfield, MA) added a pair of goals while Reilly Miller (Goshen, NY) and Kaitlyn Hutter (Epsom, NH) closed out the scoring for the visitors with a goal apiece.
Jennifer Sawicki (Westbury, NY) made nine saves for the Colonials.
Kaitlyn Marchant (Londonderry, NH) made 11 saves and withstood 32 shots by WestConn.
"We look forward to getting back into conference play this Thursday and Saturday, after tonight's win," added Thomas.
The Colonials play host to Castleton University, a Little East Conference newcomer, at 4 pm on April 11 then take take on Rhode Island College on April 13 at 1 pm.
