DARTMOUTH, MA – The Western Connecticut State University women's basketball squad suffered a 103-66 setback at Little East Conference foe UMass-Dartmouth on Thursday afternoon. Senior guard Jancy Sherwood (Poughquag, NY) paced the Colonials with 16 points including her 1,000th career point in the losing effort, while rookie guard Samantha Garcia (Highland, NY) chipped in with 13, which included a 3-for-4 showing from beyond the arc.
Shaelyn Carreiro led the Corsairs with a game-high 18 points on a 9-for-10 shooting performance, while three other players finished in double figures. The hosts shot a scorching 62.5% from the floor for the game, while the visitors finished at a 31.6% clip.
UMD finished ahead in rebounds, 46-38, and assists, 27-11. The Corsairs also racked up nine blocks while WestConn was held to just one.
The hosts led from start-to-finish, reeling off an 11-0 run to start the contest. Danyel Gonzalez capped the spurt with offensive putback.
The gap widened to 41-19 in the second quarter when Meagan Donovan connected on a three-pointer. The Corsairs held a 43-24 advantage at halftime.
It was more of the same in the second half as the hosts would cruise to victory.
However, Sherwood banked home a right side runner to become the 19th member of the Colonials 1,000 point club to account for the latest addition since Caroline Brasa inserted herself in 2015.
Sherwood ended the day with 16 scores for 1,006 overall, surpassing Colonial graduate Alex Hall (1,004) for 18th all-time.
With the loss, the Colonials dropped to 5-8 overall and 0-5 in league play, while the Corsairs improved to 12-3 and 5-1.
WestConn returns to action on Alumnae Day against visiting LEC opponent Plymouth State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
