Torres Drains 20 Points as Women’s Basketball Falls to Oneonta in Hat City Championship, 79-61

DANBURY, CT – Despite team-highs of 20 points, nine rebounds and five assists from junior guard Genesis Torres (Stratford, CT), the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball squad fell to visiting non-league foe Oneonta, 79-61, in the championship game of the Hat City Tournament hosted by the Colonials on Sunday afternoon. William Paterson upended Bridgewater State, 69-54, in the consolation game earlier in the day.

WestConn senior guard Jancy Sherwood (Poughquag, NY) added 18 points en route to being selected to the All-Tournament team, while sophomore forward Asiah Knight (Norwalk, CT) chipped in with 10 and seven boards.

Red Dragons junior guard Alexa Amalbert (Nanuet, NY) tallied a game-high 25 points on 11-of-15 shooting from the floor as she was tabbed the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament. Classmate forward Leanne Corso (Commack, NY) poured in 20 points, while senior guard Teresa Anken (Rome, NY) and classmate forward Madeline Frank (Syracuse, NY) finished with 12 and 10, respectively. Frank also garnered all-tournament honors.

The visitors were dominant in the paint, outrebounding the hosts by a 57-39 margin, which led to 23 Red Dragon second chance points compared to just 12 for the Colonials.

Oneonta also moved the ball well, dishing out 21 assists while WestConn collected 15. Both teams displayed efficient ball handling as the visitors made just 13 turnovers, while the hosts coughed it up just eight times.

The Red Dragons would lead at halftime, 41-34, before reeling off a 14-6 third quarter run that would cement the win.

The Colonials battled back in the final quarter but it wasn't enough as the Red Dragons shot a scorching 62.5% (10-of-16) in the stanza which including multiple corner trifectas from Corso.

With the loss, WestConn dropped to 5-6 overall while Oneonta improved to 9-1. The Colonials return to action for an LEC matchup at Castleton on Saturday at 3 p.m.
