Sherwood And Torres Combine For 33 Points In Loss To UMass Boston, 83-76

DANBURY, CT - Jancy Sherwood (Poughquag, NY) and Genesis Torres (Stratford, CT) combined for 33 points, but the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team fell to visiting University of Massachusetts Boston, 83-76 at Feldman Arena on Saturday afternoon.

The Colonials fall to 4-5 overall and are winless in the Little East Conference at 0-3.  The Beacons improve to 7-1 overall and 3-1 in the league.

After a 49-49 deadlock at halftime, WestConn junior guard Jessica Davis (Hamden, CT) converted the back end of two free throws, with 2:20 remaining in the third period, to give the hosts a 10-point advantage, 64-54.  It was the Colonials largest lead of the game.

However, the Beacons scored the last nine points of the quarter to draw within a point, 64-63, following a short jumper by Yodelis Paulino (Lowell, MA) with seven seconds remaining in the third stanza.

WestConn opened the final period with a 4-0 run to open up its lead to 67-64 when Taylor Saunders (Hartford, CT) buried a jumper from the baseline just 42 seconds into the frame.

Hannah Maghini (Bristol, CT) canned a three pointer at the 8:18 mark to give the Colonials a 70-65 advantage, but the Beacons were poised for the comeback.

After a pair of ties in the quarter, the final time with 4:00 left in the game, at 74-74, following a jumper by Sherwood, UMass Boston closed out the contest with a 9-2 run.

Jalani Jackson (Brockton, MA) led four Beacons in double figures with 21 points.  She also had nine rebounds and seven assists.  Joie Grassi (Plymouth, MA) added 17 points while Tahjai Mazyck (Hamden, CT) and Geanna Williams (Cromwell, CT) each chipped in 11 points for the winners.

Torres grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds and handed out a team-high six assists on Saturday.

Maghini contributed 10 points for the Colonials.

WestConn is now on a break for final exams and get back into action on Saturday, December 29 when it faces Bridgewater State University in the first round of the Hat City Tournament at the O'Neill Center.  Game time against the Bears is set for 5 pm.  Oneonta State and William Paterson cap off the first day's action at 7 pm.  The consolation and championship games of the tournament are set for Sunday, December 30 at 2 and 4 pm, respectively.

The Beacons play host to Johnson and Wales University on Thursday, December 13 at 5:30 pm.
