Jancy Sherwood Scores 19 Points In Loss To Eastern Connecticut, 99-70

DANBURY, CT - Senior guard Jancy Sherwood (Poughquag, NY) scored a team-high 19 points, but the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team dropped a 99-70 decision to intra-state rival Eastern Connecticut State University at Feldman Arena on Wednesday night.

Sherwood was joined by Genesis Torres (Stratford, CT) and Gabrielle Hurlbert (Thomaston, CT) in double figures in the scoring column, each adding 10 points to the Colonials' cause.

Mya Villard (Cromwell, CT) dominated near the hoop on offense and defense, as she scored 34 points and grabbed 19 rebounds.  She connected on 13 of 16 shots from the field in the victory.

Three other Warriors scored in double digits with Julie Jordan (Sterling, CT) adding 19 points while yanking down 10 boards.  Kelsey Santagata (Stamford, CT) and Sabrina LeMere (North Branford, CT) chipped in 13 and 11 points, respectively for Eastern Connecticut.

Julie Keckler (Trumbull, CT) led all players with 10 assists and collected six caroms for the winners.

ECSU, now 5-2 overall and 3-0 in the Little East Conference, led from the start and jumped out to a 12-0 advantage following a layup from Villard at the 6:20 mark of the first quarter.

Sherwood buried a long three-point jumper two minutes later to cap off a 7-0 run by WestConn and drawing within five points.  That is the closest it would get the rest of the way.

While WestConn connected on just 21 of 88 shots from the floor, the Warriors canned 56.3% (40-of-71) attempts on the night.  The visitors finished with a 62-26 point advantage in the paint on Wednesday.

Eastern Connecticut out rebounded WestConn, 65-45, while the Colonials forced 23 turnovers and made 14 steals.

The Colonials, which play host to UMass Boston on Saturday, December 8, even their record at 4-4 and drop to 0-2 in the league.  Game time against the Beacons is set for 1 pm.

The Warriors travel to Plymouth State University for a 1 pm tip against the Panthers.
