WALTHAM, MA – Senior guard Jancy Sherwood (Poughquag, NY) tallied a team-high 21 points, while sophomore guard Frances Snyder (Pine Plains, NY) chipped in with 18 to lead the WestConn women's basketball team past Husson, 95-92, at the Brandeis Tip-Off Tournament on Friday night. With the victory, the Colonials improved to 2-1 overall and will meet host Brandeis in the tournament championship game Saturday at 2 p.m. Husson dropped to 0-1 and will play in the consolation game.
WestConn opened the game with a 23-18 advantage to end the first quarter. Husson stormed back in the second to capture a 37-26 lead when Megan Peach – who netted a game-high 30 points – connected on a pair of free throws. They would enter halftime with a 51-38 lead.
The Colonials retaliated in the third to regain the lead. Snyder buried a three-pointer after a steal from senior forward Tashai Price (Vernon, CT), giving WestConn a 65-64 advantage.
The Colonials would lead throughout much of the final quarter until Sami Ireland hit the front end of a pair from the charity stripe as Husson snagged an 86-85 lead with 2:22 remaining.
However, WestConn displayed their poise down the stretch as Snyder and junior guard Genesis Torres (Stratford, CT) canned big shots, while Sherwood and rookie guard Hannah Maghini (Bristol, CT) combined to sink five free throws in the final minute, cementing the WestConn win.
