Genesis Torres Scores A Team-High 15 Points But Colonials Fall To RIC, 91-66

DANBURY, CT - Sophomore guard Genesis Torres (Stratford, CT) led the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team with 15 points, but the visiting Rhode Island College Anchorwomen defeated the Colonials, 91-66 at Feldman Arena on Monday night.

Torres and freshman Faith Thurmond (Seymour, CT) were the only WestConn players to reach double figures in the scoring column as Rhode Island College held high-scoring junior guard Jancy Sherwood (Poughquag, NY) to six points, 14.5 points below her season's average.  Thurmond finished with a dozen points and yanked down a team-high seven rebounds.

The Anchorwomen, now 8-14 overall and 2-10 in the Little East Conference, sported a balanced score sheet with four players reaching double figures.  Jessica Brielmaier (West Greenwich, RI) led the visitors with 17 points while Brooke Young (West Warwick, RI) and Jessa Rubera (Newton, MA) chipped in 16 and 15 points, respectively.  Ornela Livramento (Pawtucket, RI) added 12 points and led all players with eight assists.

RIC led from the 6:52 mark of the first quarter and opened up a 17-point bulge, 37-20, following a layup from Kyla DePina (Cranston, RI) with 4:35 left in the first half.

A bucket in the paint by Margaret McCaffrey (East Greenwhich, RI), with 8:51 remaining in the game, gave the visitors its largest lead of the night, 77-45.

The Anchorwomen shot a blistering 61% from from the field, connecting on 39 of 64 attempts from the floor while the Colonials converted just 22 of 77 attempts (29%).  WestConn connected on just nine of 42 attempts from beyond the arc on Monday.

WestConn, now 10-13 overall and 3-9 in the league, have now dropped six games in a row.  The Colonials wind up their home slate on Wednesday, February 14 when intra-state rival Eastern Connecticut State University visits the O'Neill Center.  Tip-off against the Warriors is slated for 5:30 pm.  RIC plays host to league-leading UMass Darmouth (20-3, 12-0 LEC) on Wednesday.  Game time is also at 5:30 pm.
