DANBURY, CT - Junior outfielder Erica Bower (Hillsborough, NJ) finished with a 2-for-6 night and drove in a pair of runs in the nightcap as the Western Connecticut State University softball team salvaged a split against Eastern Connecticut State University at Westside Field on Thursday night.
After being shut out in the opener, 5-0, the Colonials scattered 10 hits in the night cap on their way to a 6-1 victory.
WestConn is now 14-8 overall and 2-4 in the Little East Conference while the Warriors sit at 18-6 overall and 7-3 in the league.
As the sun and the temperatures dropped for the second game, the WestConn bats came alive. After a 1-1 deadlock through the first two and one half innings, the Colonials scored three run in the bottom of the third frame. Charline Plasczynski (Bristol, CT) belted an RBI double to left center field to plate pitcher Sara Tenke (Glen Cover, NY) who earlier worked out a one-out walk. Bower collected an RBI on a ground out to the third base, scoring Brittany Stancavage, who followed Tenke with a free pass (Bristol, CT). Plasczynski closed out the scoring in the third after easily scoring on a wild pitch from reliever Jackie Arndt (Chelmsford, MA).
An inning later, WestConn tacked on a pair of insurance runs on an RBI triple from Jordan Fitzsimons (Bristol, CT) and a bunt-single RBI from Stancavage.
Tenke earned the complete-game victory after cooling off the Warriors, allowing one unearned run on five hits. She struck out four and walked two and is now 4-2 on the season.
Haleigh Cardello (Litchfield, NH) suffered the loss after giving up three runs on five hits over the first two and a third innings. She walked two of the 12 batters she faced and drops to 4-3 on the year.
In the opener, Eastern Connecticut took advantage of a Colonials fielding error in the top of the third inning and scored four unearned runs.
After two outs and the bases still loaded, Brooke Matyasovsky (Orange, CT) reached on an error by WestConn third baseman Kayla Jessup (Danbury, CT) following a sharply hit ball to the left side. Laura Zenk (Hermon, ME) came in to score. A double to the right-field corner by Julia SanGiovanni (East Haven, CT) cleared the bases and gave the visitors a 4-0 advantage.
Eastern added on a run in the top of the seventh when Sara Pisanelli (Wallingford, CT) doubled off reliever Angelina Miller (Holbrook, NY) to bring Zenk home.
Morgan Sanson (Thomaston, CT) registered the complete-game victory and is now 5-2. She allowed six hits, struck out four and walked one.
Jaclyn Smith took the loss and is now 3-3 for the Colonials . She allowed four unearned run on four hits, struck out two and walked three.
WestConn travels to University of Massachusetts Dartmouth for a league doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch is set for 1 pm.
The Warriors head for Vermont for a meeting with Castleton University. The twinbill with the Spartans also begins at 1 pm.
