DANBURY, CT – Sophomore pitcher Angelina Miller (Holbrook, NY) tossed a shutout in the opener and junior Erica Bower (Hillsborough, NJ) smacked a game-winning walk-off hit in the nightcap to lead the Western Connecticut State University softball team to a doubleheader sweep over visiting Little East Conference foe Rhode Island College on Tuesday. The Colonials won Game One, 4-0, before pushing three runs across in the bottom of the seventh inning to capture Game Two, 6-5.
"Today was a team effort. It was nice to see that we fought to finish, especially in the second game," stated WestConn head coach Heather Stone following the impressive victories.
Miller was nearly unhittable in the opener, striking out 10 batters. She entered the final inning perfect before the Anchorwomen earned a pair of hits.
Sophomore Charline Plasczynski (Bristol, CT) paced the Colonials, going 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI's. Leading 1-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth, she roped a double to right field, pushing a pair of runners across home plate. Moments later, classmate Brittany Stancavage (Bristol, CT) smacked a double of her own, scoring Plasczynski, widening the gap to 4-0. Miller would strike out the final batter looking to seal the victory.
In Game Two, senior Kayla Nowak (Northford, CT) shined with a 3-for-4 showing to lead WestConn. Trailing 2-1 heading into the fourth, she drilled a single through the left side to lead off the frame before swiping a pair of bases and eventually scoring on a throwing error, deadlocking the score at 2-2.
The Anchorwomen countered with three runs in the fifth before the Colonials retaliated with a run in the bottom half, setting the score at 5-3.
Senior Tori Dugan (Norwalk, CT) led off the bottom of the seventh with a bunt single. After a pair of outs, Nowak would single followed by Plascyznski reaching base, while Dugan came across to score on a throwing error, cutting the lead to 5-4. With two runners on, Bower then smashed the game-winning hit to right center. Miller would earn her second victory of the day as she pitched the final two innings, improving to 9-8 overall.
With the pair of wins, the Colonials improved to 14-21-1 overall and 7-5 in league play, while RIC dropped to 7-19 and 1-11. WestConn returns to action for yet another conference twin bill when they travel to Plymouth State for the regular season finale on Saturday at Noon.
