DANBURY, CT - The Western Connecticut State University men's tennis team captured its first victory of the season, edging out Bridgewater State University, 5-4, at Westside Courts on Saturday afternoon.
The Colonials are now 1-5 overall and 1-2 in the Little East Conference. The Bears fall to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in league matches.
It was Hogan's win at top-flight solos against William Jones that clinched the team victory. Hogan won the first set in a close tiebreaker, 7-6 (17-15) then dominated in the second set to win 6-0.
The Colonials open the match by winning two out of three doubles matches for the first time this season. Hogan and and Jay Kilcours highlighted the pairs with a win at #1 doubles over Jones and Alexander Belinsky, 8-3.
Allers and Carino edged Jeff Pavao and Colin Lamusta, 8-5, in the second-flight pairs.
Carino cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Pavao as second-flight solos while Allers defeated Lamusta, 6-3, 6-3 at third singles.
"It certainly takes a lot of pressure off of the singles competition when you can win multiple doubles courts," stressed WestConn head coach Shawn Stillman. "We continue to improve in that area and battled all afternoon as Bridgewater put up a good fight the entire match."
WestConn get right back at it on Sunday when it plays host to John Jay College. Match time has been pushed back to a 2 pm start.
