PROVIDENCE, RI – The Western Connecticut State University men's tennis team opened the 2019 slate with a loss at Rhode Island College, 6-3, on Sunday afternoon at the RIC Courts. The match was originally scheduled for yesterday but was postponed until Sunday.
"Our guys started out tentative in doubles. They weren't aggressive and going for their shots and they missed opportunities during points to take control of the game. It's very difficult to comeback and win after losing all three doubles matches," stated WestConn head coach Shawn Stillman following the effort.
After dropping the doubles, sophomore William Hogan (Ridgefield, CT) got WestConn on the board with a 7-6, 6-2 singles win. Classmate Matthew Carino (Sandy Hook, CT) would follow suit with a 6-3, 6-1 victory before senior Chauncey Allers (Wilton, CT) notched a 6-2, 7-5 in the third singles slot for WestConn.
The Colonials return to action for their home opener against FDU-Florham on Friday at 4 p.m.
