Loads Of LEC Weekly Honorees This Week For WestConn

PAWTUCKET, RI - Western Connecticut State University was well represented in this week's Little East Conference weekly honors as three men's soccer and two women's soccer student-athletes were named to the league's top honors on Monday.

WOMEN'S SOCCER  

Offensive Player of the Week

Kaleigh Panek (Western Connecticut) – Freshman – Forward – Shelton, Conn.
Panek was named LEC Offensive Player of the Week after scoring three goals, all of them game-winners, in a 3-0-0 week for the Colonials, who were 1-0 winners at Western New England and 4-1 victors at Manhattanville before capping the week with a 3-0 LEC triumph at Rhode Island College. She is now tied for third in the conference in goals (7) and is tied for fifth in the league in points (14)

Defensive Player of the Week

Kate Martin (Plymouth State) – Senior – Midfield – Westmoreland, N.H.
Kate Martin was named LEC Defensive Player of the Week after helping lead the Panthers to a 1-0-1 week against a pair of in-state rivals. She scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in a 2-0 conference won over Keene State, marking the program's first win over the Owls since 1998. Kate Martin helped keep New England College off the board for the final 96:25, allowing Plymouth State to rally from an early two-goal deficit to earn a 2-2 draw.  

Goalkeeper/Rookie of the Week

Karly Martin (Western Connecticut) – Freshman – Bristol, Conn.
Karly Martin was named the LEC Goalkeeper of the Week and Rookie of the Week after posting a pair of shutout victories in the first two starts of her collegiate career. She registered seven saved in a 1-0 non-conference win at Western New England before stopping all four shots on goal in a 3-0 LEC victory at Rhode Island College.

 

MEN'S SOCCER

Offensive Player of the Week

Chauncey Allers (Western Connecticut) – Senior – Forward – Wilton, Conn.
Allers was named Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season after totaling two goals and two assists for six points in a 3-0-0 week for the Colonials. He scored one goal and assisted on another in a 5-0 non-conference win at Albertus Magnus before finding the back of the net in a 2-1 win over John Jay, which made him the program's all-time leader in goals (45). Allers capped the week by setting up a goal in Western Connecticut's 3-1 LEC victory over Rhode Island College. He currently leads the conference in goals (10) and points (26), and is second in assists (6).

Defensive Player of the Week

Thomas Langkafel (Western Connecticut) – Junior – Back – Carmel, N.Y.
Langkafel was named LEC Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in 2018 after leading a defensive unit that allowed just two goals in a 3-0-0 week for the Colonials, including a shutout victory at Albertus Magnus. He chipped in offensively with an assist in Western Connecticut's 3-1 LEC triumph over Rhode Island College in a rematch of the 2017 LEC tournament final.

Goalkeeper of the Week

Daniel Szabo (Western Connecticut) – Sophomore – Trumbull, Conn.
Szabo was named LEC Goalkeeper of the Week posting a 2-0-0 record with a 0.50 goals against average after stopping 11 of the 12 shots on goal her faced in three appearances last week for WestConn. He had five saves in a scoreless second half of a 2-1 non-conference win over John Jay before stopping three shots in a 3-1 LEC victory over Rhode Island College. 

Rookie of the Week

Jacob Castro (UMass Dartmouth) – Freshman – Goalkeeper – Swansea, Mass.
Castro was named LEC Rookie of the Week for the first time this season after stopping five of the six shots on goal her faced in a 2-1 conference win at Castleton, marking the first collegiate victory of his career.
