DANBURY, CT - Senior midfielder Darion Richeme' (Danbury, CT) drilled the game-winning goal, off a free kick 25 yards out to lift the Western Connecticut State University men's soccer team to a thrilling, 1-0 victory over the Coast Guard Academy at the Westside Athletic Complex on Tuesday night.
Richeme' was an integral part of WestConn's offense which out-shot the Bears, 20-5. His shot 1:40 into the contest nearly put the Colonials up 1-0 in the early going. Coast Guard starting keeper William Bragaw (Niantic, CT) took the blast to the chest and was able to compose the visitor's defense.
Bragaw made four saves before exciting the game following a collision with 30:02 remaining in the deadlocked affair. Dakota Harich (New Market, MD), now 1-2-1 on the year, made a pair of saves in Bragaw's stead.
Daniel Szabo (Trumbull, CT) earned the victory in goal for WestConn and is now 2-0 in five non-conference games. The sophomore netminder came on, as he has for much of his collegiate career, at the start of the second half.
Senior Luca DiCarlo (Orange, CT) was untested in the first stanza by the Bears.
"Tonight we saw a glimpse of what this team is capable of," stated WestConn legendary head coach Joe Mingachos. "Coast Guard is bigger, stronger and as you can imagine, one of the most fit teams we are going to play this year. We were able to control the ball from start to finish. Our midfielders and backs showed their best performance of the season."
The Colonials, winners of four straight game, are now 4-1 on the season. The defending Little East Conference champions begin league play on Saturday when they travel to LEC newcomer Castleton for a 12 noon start against the Spartans.
Coast Guard, now 1-2-2, play host to Springfield College on Saturday, September 15. Game time between the Bears and The Pride is set for 11:30 am in New London, CT.
