GORHAM, ME - Senior guard Aaron Samuel (Stratford, CT) led a trio of Western Connecticut State University men's basketball players in double figures, 23 in total, as the Colonials defeated host University of Southern Maine, 68-60, at Hill Gym on Monday afternoon.
Samuel connected on 8-of-11 attempts from the field and converted 7-of-11 from the free-throw line while grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds for the winners.
Christian McCue led the Huskies, now 4-12 overall and 2-7 in the league, with 19 points. Derek Haney and Jayvon Pitts-Young added 15 and 11 points for the hosts. The trio combined to shoot 13-of-33 from the floor while the rest of the Huskies buried just five more field-goal attempts on their way to shooting 34.6% from the field on Monday.
WestConn canned 49% (25-of-51) of its attempts from the hardwood, led by Samuel's and McLeod's matching 8-for-11 finish.
The Colonials, now 12-6 overall and tied in third place in the LEC with a 6-3 record, built their largest lead, 14 points, 57-43 when Samuel hit a runner in the lane at the 9:06 mark of the second half.
Southern Maine held a five-point advantage, 11-6, 5:19 into the contest when McCue drilled a long three-point bucket.
WestConn, winners of five of its last seven games, plays host to Castleton University this Wednesday. Tip-off against the Spartans is set for 7:30 pm at Feldman Arena.
The Huskies host University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on January 23, also at 7:30 pm.
