FITCHBURG, MA – Rookie Kimberly Brower (Mahopac, NY) took a feed from sophomore Morgan Matthews (Bethel, CT) and tallied the game-winning goal on a penalty corner as time expired in the first half to lead the WestConn field hockey team to a 1-0 victory at Little East Conference nemesis Fitchburg State on Tuesday night at Elliot Field. Rookie Neve Manion (Newington, CT) was stellar in net and earned the shutout win for the Colonials who improved to 3-4 overall and 3-1 in conference league play. The Falcons fell to 2-3 and 0-3.
"Manion made several clutch saves in the first half to keep us in the game. We had great execution on the penalty corner for the go-ahead goal. Fitchburg came at us hard in the second half, but Neve came up big again as we were able to hold them off," said WestConn head coach Dani McDonnell following the nailbiting win.
The Falcons controlled the majority of play, outshooting the Colonials by a 22-4 margin. However, the visitors made the most of their single scoring opportunity (one shot on goal) when Brower netted her second goal of the season.
WestConn returns to action at non-division foe Ramapo on Thursday at 4 p.m. before returning home for an LEC matchup against Keene State on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
