WORCESTER, MA – Sophomore forward Morgan Matthews (Bethel, CT) scurried down the field to notch her team-leading fourth goal of the season as the Western Connecticut State University field hockey squad fell at Little East Conference foe Worcester State, 7-1, on Saturday afternoon.
"Worcester overwhelmed us in the first half with their speed. We could not adjust quickly enough. We had our opportunities with shots and offensive corner in the second half but we were unable to capitalize," said WestConn head coach Dani McDonnell following the loss.
The host would hold a 5-0 advantage before Matthews answered for the Colonials to start the second stanza. WestConn rookie goalkeeper Neve Manion (Newington, CT) took the loss, recording 11 saves, while senior Greta McConnell (Norwalk, CT) and sophomore Shannon Lynch (Sandy Hook, CT) each registered defensive saves.
With the loss, the Colonials dropped to 2-4 overall and 2-1 in conference play, while the Lancers improved to 3-2 and 2-0.
WestConn returns to action for yet another league matchup when they travel to Fitchburg State on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
