HARTFORD, CT – In a twin bill originally scheduled to be played in Danbury on Saturday, the Western Connecticut State University baseball squad dropped a pair of games to Little East Conference nemesis Southern Maine on Sunday at Trinity College. The Colonials dropped the opener, 13-2, before being downed in Game Two, 24-7.
With the pair of losses, WestConn moved to 1-12 overall and 0-2 in league play, while the Huskies improved to 9-2 and 2-0.
Jake Dexter, Dylan Hapworth and Kip Richard each tallied a pair of hits to lead Southern Maine, while Anthony Deglfico smashed a grand slam over the right field wall to round out the scoring for the Huskies.
WestConn senior righty Matt Fasoli (Trumbull, CT) took the loss and dropped to 0-3 while Ben Lambert tossed seven scoreless innings while striking out six, improving to 2-0 for Southern Maine.
The Huskies bats were on fire in Game Two as they reeled off 24 runs on 28 hits. Andrew Olszak put together a 4-for-5 showing with four RBI's, while Zach Quintal also added four hits while driving in eight runs.
Rookie Zach Edwards (Seymour, CT) and sophomore Andrew Luis (Danbury, CT) notched two RBI's apiece to lead the Colonials. Edwards roped a double down the left field line in the third before Luis ripped a triple to center to account for four of WestConn's seven runs.
Quintal would triple in the fifth, double twice in the sixth and wallop a grand slam over the left field fence in the seventh en route to his stellar performance for the Huskies.
WestConn will look to rebound when they host non-conference foe Ramapo on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
